Dr Samrat Sengupta joined Fraser Chambers to start his pupillage in October 2021. Having now successfully completed first six, he is on his feet from April 2022. Samrat’s area of work include spending 50% of his time seconded to a solicitors’ firm doing Magistrates’ Courts trials, first appearances, bail applications and plea in mitigation. The other half of his pupillage involve drafting pre-action protocols, particulars of claims and opinions on civil, public law and inquest matters.
Prior to transferring to the Bar, Samrat was a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist in the NHS for over 15 years with extensive experience in managing high risk offenders with complex mental health problems. He had wide-ranging skills in providing expert evidence in matters involving fitness to plead, contested diminished responsibility and mental health review tribunals. He had also published research, written book chapters and presented in conferences on law and mental health. He is a Bachelor in Medicine and a Bachelor in Surgery (MBBS) from Calcutta University, India, Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, England, Master of Science in Medical Anthropology from UCL and Graduate Diploma in Law. Samrat is also CEDR approved mediator. He was called to the Bar in March 2019 by the Inner Temple.
In his spare time, he is an actor working in fringe theatre, in museums as a story-teller, and performed in Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
